VOC stands for Volatile Organic Compound. In general, VOCs are not considered environmentally friendly. In some countries or regions, VOC emissions are restricted by legislation. Alcohols are VOCs. In some cases, the use of alcohol-based fluxes in wave soldering in electronics manufacturing can pose a problem with VOC emission restrictions. An easy solution in such a case is to use a flux that is VOC-free for soldering. Generally speaking, this is a water-based flux. In addition to eliminating VOC emissions, water-based fluxes have other advantages over alcohol-based fluxes, such as lower consumption, no fire hazard, no need for special transport and storage, less odor in the production area, etc. However, water-based fluxes are generally more sensitive to the correct settings of the spray fluxer in order to achieve good flux application on the surface and in the through-holes. In some cases, a slightly higher preheating temperature is also required for the water to evaporate.
